Updated Natural Skincare Routine

It's been a while since I did a skincare routine, and it definitely has changed a lot in the last few months - especially now that it's Autumn here in Sydney & my skin just looooves to crack. Ever since getting off of Roaccutane my skin has never really been the same. It was a "quick fix" drug that yes, did clear my skin up temporarily, but left it with other conditions I now have to take care of. Thanks to going Vegan, most of these problems have gone away.

Getting off the dairy was a HUGE improvement for my skin, and I can't recommend it enough! It was causing the cystic and hormonal acne that even Roaccutane couldn't cure. However since then, my skin has been left in the driest of conditions so it's been important that I actually don't use "soap" to wash my skin. Soap not only strips away built up dirt, makeup and excess sebum on the skin but it clears your skin of its natural oils that are meant to be there as a natural moisturiser. Considering I already have dry skin, this was not doing me any favours.

I learnt, thanks to this amazing woman at one of the Lush stores, that since I have dry skin, I should be washing my face with oils! As strange as it sounds, washing your skins with plant oils, removes all the dirt, dead skin and makeup but not your own skins natural oils. The product I use to wash my face at the moment is Ultrabland, and damn, it's pretty amazing. It leaves my face super fresh but highly moisturised too because it's so gentle. I usually use my Sukin toner after, followed by bit of coconut or rosehip oil to further moisturise my skin. Even with people who have combination or oily skin can use this method as well to rebalance their skin, since excessively striping away your natural skin oils only causes it to produce more.

As a body wash I use Dr Bronner's Magic 18-in-1 Hemp Rose Soap, which has a similar effect as the Ultrabland, but just for my body. While it sounds like I use a lot of products, all these brands are actually so cheap, eco-friendly and organic.

I had to post these beautiful little organic pink lady apples I bought at the food markets this morning - having easy access to fruit (even in my room) just makes it another way to get those fantastic vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients into your body to help you skin glow! These apples were just $3.50 for a bunch. It really doesn't cost as much as people seem to think to look after your body properly.

EAT BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES! It does everything from making your skin glow by maximising iron levels to promoting shinier, thicker and fasting growing hair. Molasses is extremely good for you despite what 'other people' say in that sugar is bad for you. It's basically concentrated sugar cane syrup that retains all the super nutrients such as high levels of iron, b6, calcium, magnesium, copper, manganese, selenium and potassium. You only 1 - 2 spoonfuls a day and it's also rich in antioxidants, which makes it a great in combating eczema, acne, psoriasis and other skin conditions too!

Spirulina, Barley Grass and Chlorella are also amazing because it is alkalising and will help heal your gut. Since most acne is a sign of poor gut health, this will be extremely beneficial too. This particular mix has a blend of the world's top 5 most nutrient-rich superfoods and contains vitamin b12, essential fatty acids, vitamin C, calcium, chlorophyll, folic acid, iron and plenty more. I've definitely seen a difference with my skin ever since starting this diet and skincare routine. Also, hydrate, hydrate and hydrate. The most simplest, cheapest and best way to get amazing skin. People seem to forget your body is made up of 70% water, so don't let yourself get thirsty!

The only time I ever break out now is if I have a couple of cheeky ciders or drinks on the weekend, no more hormonal break outs finally! Whenever I see young girls going on The Pill, or saying they want to go on Roaccutane I absolutely cringe. It's not natural, and is only a temporary solution used to mask the real problem lying within. If you know someone who is suffering from acne or other skin conditions, feel free to send them this post & help them find their path to real health.

Coachella Dreaming

So I noticed I haven't done a design post in a while - I definitely have been food obsessed lately. But last weekend I did obsessively keep up to date with the #Coachella2015 hashtag on Instagram and stream live shows like Alison Wonderland, Vic Mensa and Tyler The Creator. With a serious case of FOMO, heavily lusting over the festival fashion and overall chill vibes of the weekend, I took inspiration to practise my own hand written calligraphy and see where it took me ...

Already putting together next years outfit to hopefully make it to Coachella myself, I plan to make a tie dye dress similar to the Rat & Boa one above!

The 'V' Word

Going Vegan is the easy part .... dealing with everything else, is not.

At first looking into this lifestyle, I wasn't at all scared what it would bring, but more excited and thrilled to be helping my health, the animals and the planet with every decision I took on a daily basis. It is only until now that I have become fully Vegan, I have realised the daily implications that it has brought to my life. Of course nothing could ever deter myself to going back to the horrible way I was eating before.  Arguments with family members and slight differences in social settings were the only main issues before, and to be fair, they really didn't bother me. Only recently I encountered an unfamiliar emotion; stress.

Now, I have always interacted with stress on a minimal level in my everyday life, but this type of stress is unguarded and creeps up on me when I least expect it. For example, being in the movie theatres recently and noticing people had more of an emotional response with a robot character pleading not to be hacked up to pieces with a chainsaw. As the character begged not to be hurt, my heart immediately sunk and I felt quiet upset knowing that the people in the audience of the theatre really wouldn't know that this happens on a daily basis in real life, in what is really a living hell; your everyday abattoir. Or maybe what upset me further is that people do know what is going on, yet they absolutely disregard it because of a number of trivial reasons i.e. your fucking tastebuds are more important than someone's life. As the character in the film, had it's limb cut off (and let me remind you, it was technically a non-sentient being), it was a sad and ruthless moment, demonstrating that those with power in society, always get what what they want from the innocent, trusting victim. To see people in a theatre tearing up over a robot, I was also furious. Of course, the chances of being in a whole theatre of Vegans, would clearly of not been the case,  it just made me realise the LACK OF compassion we see in society towards real life events.

What I've realised is once your eyes and most importantly YOUR MIND is opened, it's impossible to unsee what you have learned, and in turn it is quiet distressing. So few people in this world, ESPECIALLY in the Western world really know whats going on or even give a fuck. Yes, we are so very lucky to live in these parts of the world, and if you're reading this now, you are one of those lucky few. This miracle we call "Google", should be used to its full advantage and not just for connecting with others. It should be used to connect the dots in the world. There is a reason there is an obesity problem. There is a reason there is global warming. And there is a reason why slaughterhouses don't have glass walls.

In spite of this, I did something to help me feel proactive in my current state of mind. Being part of the Sydney Vegan Club, I went along to one of the free seminar's called "How To Inspire Profound Lifestyle Change in Others". It helped me to learn the importance of helping inspire those who are interested and showing early signs vs those people who have the utmost arrogance and "superiority" to any animal aka a Speciesist. Time is precious, and so is your sanity. And at the end of the day, some people really don't aspire to be the fittest, healthiest or happiest they can be. It was good to hear from someone who has tried and tested methods in helping people awaken from their ignorant slumber (aka watch Earthlings.com), and it made me feel more at peace and hopeful for the future. At the end of the day, it's not going to be the local butcher or CEO of McDonald's who advocates for the right's of these precious animals, it's going to be us.

The "Get Sh*t Done" list - FREE DL

You know when you have heaps of sh*t to do but you don't want to do it ? Yep, that's like me on a daily basis really, however I thought why not at least MOTIVATE yourself to write these things down so at least they're out of your head and onto paper to help clear your thoughts too?

Also, as a way to thank so many of you for your encouraging comments on my growing body of work, I wanted to give something back.

Introducing the "Get Sh*t Done" list. I've made it eye catching and purrrrdddyy, so that you WANT to look at it and see what you gotta get going with next!

HairBliss Repair Oil Review

I was ever so kindly given a sample of this by HairBliss themselves to see what I thought on the product. To be honest, I hadn't heard of the brand before, so I checked them out and was super pleased to see that the company has a strong focus on all natural and organic ingredients. Being a person who takes note of what I use on my body, I was eager to try this out!

After reading the list of ingredients I knew that the amount of nourishing power this oil treatment has, had to be good! It includes a blend of coconut, castor,  avocado,  olive oil, rosemary,  cedarwood, lavender and geranium oils - which is a lot, but each ingredient is specific to helping to repair your hair and scalp.

What I love about their website also, is that they say "Do you know how incredible your body is designed to feel?" which I completely agree. We all need to start treasuring our bodies (inside & out) with the most naturalist ingredients instead of masking ourself with chemicals and fake colourings etc.

The oil treatment itself I have to say, perhaps didn't smell as good as I had hoped (I usually use pure coconut oil on my hair as a treatment which smells delicious), I think which was due to the rosemary and olive oil in the treatment - but of course that didn't deter me from using it. I coated my hair from scalp to tip with about 2 small handfuls of the oil with plenty to spare in the pouch, and left it on for about 45 minutes. Now like all oil treatments, they can be a little tricky to get out of the hair, so I shampooed twice and conditioned once just to be sure.

I've recently (say, around the last 3 months) had a bit more dandruff than usual - perhaps due to swapping between the hot weather outside, and the cold air conditioning inside buildings. Even just after one treatment I have had noticeably less dandruff (virtually gone!) which I am stoked about, hair is definitely softer and would definitely use again! Like most products, you really have to use it a couple of times to see real benefits, so I definitely shall be continuing with my HairBliss treatment this summer!

EDIT: Thanks guys for uploading my review onto the HairBliss Instagram page!

10 Tips to being a better creative!

Thanks to We The Spies for her "50 weeks of blogging!" challenge, I hoped on the blogging train a tad late in week #3 for the topic of "10 Tips to...", to help other creatives utilise their talent!

1. Declutter! This includes organising a desk space that inspires your creativity, as well as allowing yourself to actually think and get your ideas out clearly. This also includes the desktop on your computer! We all know how messy that can get.

2. Resources! Allow yourself to be the best you can by not limiting the programs you have. Definitely get Creative Cloud from Adobe which allows you to custom download which programs you need every month. Definitely worth investing!

3. Get in the zone! For me, this usually includes pumping an awesome set list and a coffee or three.

4. Organise your ideas! Apps such as Mindly and Timeful help to organise my brain, especially when I'm on the bus and have a great idea. Pinterest as well is a wonderful way to theme your ideas together too!

5. Create in short spurts! As a said in my previous blog, create until you are tired, but stop after that - otherwise you'll be going around in circles.

6. Teach yourself! You are the best teacher you have, and anything you learn by yourself, you're more liking to remember it too. Don't be afraid of Google! As long as you know what you want to create, but don't know how, Google will surely help.

7. Show it off! Get feedback through online platforms such as the Loop, Behance and Instagram! Or even start a blog, Tumblr or even a mentor in the creative industry.

8. Design for you! (And no one else) .... until you have a client, then of course listen to their needs and apply what you've learnt. Be selfish like an Artist, but listen like a Therapist.

9. Find inspiration in other outlets! If I get stuck I turn to photography or drawing as a way to combat my creative rut. Even going for a run or swim at the beach, and make enough "you" time, so you don't go too crazy. It's all about the balance!

10. Enjoy! Don't forget to enjoy what you do, because in the end, this is your time and your portfolio. Make it the best you can, and only put pieces in it that you are proud of and that show off your skills. Never put anything you don't personally like (yes, we all have those half-assed projects lying around haha)

SKILLS N STUFF

Sometimes it's scary to trial a new style or new aesthetic in the design world. For me, there is a fine line between combining current design/art/fashion trends and adding those "Nu" feels; But that's another reasons to have this blog as well, to add all those experimental pieces that didn't make the cut. I always strive to do something a little different, while still practising skills that I know I'll need in the real world.

A little fact about me: I'm actually the laziest designer. If I find a way to do something in 2 seconds, I'll do that, and if it turns out differently to how I originally wanted it, BUT it's still works - I'll usually leave it at that haha. Trial and error is the key to my success with a dash of laziness.

I think importantly, as a designer, you learn your own key skills in your favourite programs and become the master of those. I find it highly integral to the success of your designs to be different, have your own style, and don't let others persuade you. What's the point if everybody's work looks the same? I know my work can look similar to others and I feel like i'm still learning, but until I know what I'm really doing, I just use my computer like a kid on a playground, and run amuck on the programs until I'm tired and worn out.

Why I went V E G A N

To say exactly why I went vegan, isn't answered by one simple reason; It is an accumulation of my own personal knowledge about the world we live in, learning about the way in which our bodies work and seeing the mass consequence of day to day activities that effects the longevity of this planet. This has been contributed by watching documentaries, thousands of personal accounts on Veganism on Youtube  (and yes, OTHER lifestyles (e.g. Paleo, Atkins) to educate myself on all aspects & biases on eating) and seeing the results speak for themselves within my own body.

Although I now have a thousand reasons to never want anything else but earth's food for my body, the reason was triggered by one occurring problem; feeling crap after eating, as in lethargic, having the urge to rest or sleep, feeling cranky and knowing I had a hormonal imbalance (acne & period pains). Going from a diet of eggs for breakfast, chicken toasted sandwich for lunch and mince bolognese pasta for dinner, I can see why I was so cranky and upset all the time - The amount of naturally occurring hormones, fat and steroids/ antibiotics in my food was astounding. And the worst thing is, I had no idea.

I had heard of Veganism before, but really had no idea what it was about, especially since I was so happy sitting in my own little bubble of "but I love my cheese and schnitzel/ lasagne/ sunday roast way too much". I have always loved fruit though, but still only had maybe a piece a day, and would never have even dreamed of making a meal of it. But still I knew, something wasn't right with my body, especially since my acne never went away. I knew this was my body's way of telling me something isn't right. However, instead of looking to diet and lifestyle for the fix of these problems originally, I was taken to a dermatologist at 19 and put on a drug, Roaccutane, which I highly regret (I'll go more into this maybe at a later time). Even after I finished the 12 month course of this toxic, quick fix drug, I still had acne and my body was feeling weak. The dermatologist recommended that I do a second course, and I turned it down knowing that I could heal my body naturally if I just did a bit of research.

Now below is just the smallest insight to my skin beforehand. While never was it horrendous, it was just flat out consistent, all month round. The worst I would have were the cystic acne bumps underneath my skin that would be tender and painful, which I had on my back as well unfortunately. Let me tell you creating a photo collage of your breakouts sans make up, was not fun, but I want to show how much my skin has changed and how well it has healed, especially since I had many deep scars and marks on my face from consistently having acne. Eating a current diet that not longer promotes hormone disruption or a high fat percentage, allowed my body to heal. But importantly, a Vegan lifestyle is super hydrating, including all the fresh fruit and veg which is mostly water; hydrating you from the inside out, not to mention the abundance of vitamins and minerals that support your body in healing and repairing itself.

It literally only took me two seconds to find out what I needed to find *Thank god I live in the era of the internet*. And thanks to few amazing people I've met along the way who have helped to open my eyes about importance of what we put in our bodies, with their own testimonies and importantly, popping that bubble of ignorance I carried around myself for so many years about the cruelty in the animal production industry.

I've never been a huge fan of milk anyway, but learning about how harmful milk/ dairy products are to your health, especially in the way that they contain a specific growth hormone (even in the most ORGANIC of milk), because that is the very purpose of milk; to nuture, feed and support the growth of young calf into fully grown 700kg cow. This growth hormone, known as Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1), which is also present in human's milk also, is meant purely to be consumed by the infant, since most of the growing (in both species) happens in the first few years of its life. The continual consumption of cow's milk in adult humans, behaves as a cancer-accelerator (cancer referring to abnormal cell growth). Important to know as well, that this IGF-1 is not destroyed in the pasteurisation process nor during human digestion and is therefor biologically active in humans, being associated with breast, prostate and colon cancers. Due to the poor conditions of dairy farms as well, and since it is completely unnatural for the female cows to be hooked up to a suction pump all day, even the most minuscule of infections of the udder will mean there are puss cells going into the milk that you will drink. To combat this problem, farmers pump these cows full of antibiotics to heal them and, you guessed it, this ends up in the milk people drink too.

Milk and dairy products aren't the only animal products harmful to your health. I learnt as well, after thinking most of my life that meat was essential to health, to provide protein, iron and other nutrients (which it actually does provide, however comes with too many nasties to make it a positive contribution to your health). Even the most "leanest" of meat, still has a higher percentage of fat than you think, hidden in the muscle as intramuscular fat. This is important to know, as I started learning about what the human body actually runs on. The brain alone runs off of glucose which is processed from carbohydrates in the body.

I learnt a lot from the book 80/10/10, which in its name describes how we should be eating. 80% of our calories for energy from carbohydrate foods (All fruit, grains, starches), 10% of calories from protein (Fruit naturally contains the perfection ratio of carbs/ protein/ fats - funny that?), and 10% of calories from fat (avocados, nuts, chickpeas etc). One of my favourite fruits is the banana, literally nature's superfood; high in fiber, so low in fat and salt it barely counts plus is the most gentlest, digestible fruit (when ripe and spotty!) on the stomach. Of course, seeing as I love my graphic design; I thought I might start making nutrition information boards to help spread the message of health, Veganism and just encourage people to give it a go.

Documentaries I highly, HIGHLY recommend include Forks Over Knives, Blackfish, Earthlings, Food Inc and Super Size Me. I also follow and contribute a lot of the information I now know to awesome people in the vegan community such as Dr McDougall, Freelee the Banana Girl, FullyRaw Kristina, Loni Jane, Gary Yourovsky, Durian Rider and so so many more. So go look them up!

It is so important to start educating yourself about the world we live in and realise that everything is NOT as it seems. The meat and dairy industry work hand in hand with the pharmaceutical giants to create a cycle of sickness and "health". While I may not go into detail about everything I've learnt and know, it all starts with that curiosity and you musn't ignore it. More importantly, trust your gut and not your tastebuds because surely you know that animals don't willingly give their life to be your food? Neither is it all happy fun times in these SLAUGHTERHOUSES or that eating all this pain, stress and despair can't be positive on your body, let alone your subconscious being. I've educated myself to a point where I don't need to see anymore footage of what happens in these industries; and any sane person who sees this footage knows it's not right. Images of baby piglets with their skulls smashed in, lying on their siblings in the bin; scenes of mother cows mourning for their calf, who is only a few days old, taken away to be slaughtered in only a couple of weeks for "veal", chickens turned cannibal on each other out of pure frustration being kept in the dark coops their whole lives, spring to mind.

It's not pretty. And neither should you keep pretending it is. Simply take the first leap into giving your body, mind and soul the best it can be, and just watch THIS trailer.

You might be curious now, what do I eat? Well interestingly now that I've been Vegan for almost a year and have been Vegetarian for longer, my palate has changed a lot. I crave simple foods, mostly fresh, but still cooked food too. For breakfast I always eat fruit, a 7 banana smoothie with water, ice, coconut sugar or a monomeal of half a watermelon, rockmelon, a bunch of mango's - whatever is in season! Somedays I might just crave avocado on toast with a fresh juice or I even had pasta the other day because it was cold, but it's full of those carbohydrates that your body needs for its everyday energy.

Lunch is easy too. Either more fruit,  salad rolls, vegan burgers, baked potato or sweet potato with guacamole, cous cous salad, Vietnamese pho, Thai noodles, anything with a good base of starch, which thanks to Dr McDougall, I have learnt all about the necessities of that.

Dinner is similar, maybe a few servings of minestrone, mushroom risotto, vegetable pasta, pizza (you can make anything vegan!) or even a huge bowl of nice cream (a bunch of frozen bananas blended with ice) and with coconut sugar sprinkled on top. Basically fruit all day and night, some people do suggest to stop eating fruit after cooked meals because these digest quicker, but I don't seem to have a problem with it. It's all about listening to your body.

The best thing now is, I can literally eat as much as I want and 1) I have never felt sick or sleepy or gross after a meal, but instead, completely energised and happy. And you know why? Plant foods digest with the least required energy, and thus allowing you to ACTUALLY use that energy for your everyday tasks - pretty simple yeah? Those who eat at McDonald's or even just have a fatty meal, you will find you need to rest because your body wants to use that energy to help digest that food. You literally waste your energy back into digesting. Also 2) My iron levels and energy levels are higher than ever too. No headache's after meals, no grumpiness, no mood swings, no period pains and no acne. My body is almost on it's way to being fully balanced again.

It definitely helps having like-minded people around you, absolutely 100%. It wasn't easy at first for me in the beginning, but now I can see since I have stuck to my guns, the people I love have started to change for the better too. Even my boyfriend, who is considered an athlete, eats 100% Vegan now and has noticed the difference. I'm beginning to see a ripple effect in my actions with others and that makes me absolutely ecstatic.

DREAM DESK SPACE

We can all dream right? Hmm yeah, one day this will be the space I can continue to create and explore all the areas of my mind... Maybe with a little window with the view of the beach, or the caldera of Santorini, or rainforest in Bali...

D E S I G N S P U R T '14/15

Recently I've had what I call a "why-am-I-even-a-designer" moment. I've learnt over the last few years that inspiration is meant to come in waves, as are the times your designs turn out successful. But most importantly, when you work on a project and your trying to make it come to life and it's looking all as hell flat on your screen and your scream "DO YOU EVEN DESIGN" to yourself, it's time to file that project away and give your head some space and come back and look at it with fresh eyes a bit later. This has been really working for me recently, especially since I'll try just about anything to gives this designer's brain a well needed spurt of imagination.

Not gonna lie, creating a mini moodboard, or as I like to call it, "vibe board" helps me to gather all the bits and pieces running around my head, to see if it will all mesh together well.

Below are some samples that I started making for a client - they backed out, so now I can use these images however I please .... Would love for these to end up on the cover of some EP or vinyl...

Hope you enjoyed my works from the early Summer ... posting this so that you can see them in full HD quality and not just off the tiny Instagram page. Having these here also as a reminder that even though it may be a slow and long process, design work can be successful if I am persistant, even just doing a tiny task a day helps to keep the purr of motivation and inspiration consistent.

Tumblr + Seasonal Colour Palettes

I've been using good ol' Tumblr for a few years now, mainly as a mood board for current projects, to kill 20 hours of my day & have no social life. It's great isn't it ? I'm always keen to follow new people, especially other artists and creatives ! Follow my page here ----> Daydream Delusion

This month as the weather swaps from glorious sunny days to chill windy nights, I can feel autumn really settling in. It's actually such a glorious season because there's nothing like being all rugged up in big jackets and scarves to protect yourself from the icy wind, but still able to lie in sun like a little lizard and really soak those rays up for extra warmth, with a coffee in your hand and sketch pad in the other.

This months inspiration board has been progressing for awhile. I find it fascinating how we are attracted to certain colours at certain times of the year, but more recently I've been feeling icy, crisp palettes of eggshell blue, lavender and light grey.
