Does it take a certain type of person to go Vegan?

2015 Photography © Lunah Designs

As I sit here, waiting for my soy latte at one of my favourite cafes, I realised that as much as I am like other people, I am also very different. I am your average uni student, with a constant struggle for funds, ordering a simple cup of coffee. Yet as I do this task, it gives me peace knowing that with every decision I make, I am helping contribute to a better planet; a better system; a way of changing the network in which we as humanity have completely fucked up in a quest to satisfy personal gluttony. It only takes one second to make a choice which is either going to help or harm the planet.

Why is it that even though we live in a time where we have access to infinite amounts of information (in the form of medical studies, live lectures, free online documentaries and Youtube testimonies) and yet people still don't have a clue about what is a) destroying the environment or that b) you can help with every decision you make? Because most people genuinely don't seem to care at the end of the day. Not everyone wants to be the best version of themselves, has the desire to help other sentient beings or even give our planet the best possible chance for survival. But for those people who do have that fire within themselves to learn about the world and see outside of the societal conditioning they have grown up with, will view Veganism with appreciation and consideration.

So yes, it does take a certain type of person to go Vegan. But that doesn't mean that no one can, especially when it comes to age. Like I said before, if you're reading this blog post now, your one of those lucky few in the world who has access to unlimited information to the world we live in. Earthling Maxi is a perfect example of someone who is conscious of her soundings, and thereby lives accordingly, at only 16 years of age! I wish I was that open when I was that young, but it took me 20 years to awaken. Cherie of @thrivingonplants is another perfect example as well. At just 16 too, she has not only embraced Veganism, but also inspired thousands to do so by demonstrating how easy, delicious and simple this lifestyle really is. Well done girls, for representing the Australian Vegan lifestyle - we really do have a choice living in first world country, to not only make a better future, but help support Vegan businesses such as new cafes and restaurants, make other businesses consider having Vegan options (e.g. plant-based cheese) and support the fruit and vegetable farmers of our country too!

And yes, while I am a raw till 4, plant-based eater,  I am trying to slowly give up coffee - but the simple act of swapping dairy cow's milk to soy or almond milk is a split-second choice when ordering one. Not only does it help your health, it tastes almost exactly the same but without the cost of murdering an innocent animals life (yes, all dairy cows end up at the slaughterhouse as meat consumption in Australia). So start changing up little things in your everyday life! Try ordering the veggie option out at restaurants, trying new foods like tahini instead of mayonnaise, or having coconut yoghurt or fruit ice-cream (frozen fruit blended) as your dessert! Not only will your body feel the difference and thank you, daily acts of kindness do not need to be announced to the world since all acts of kindness mean the world to the animal.

You don't have to eat less, you just have to eat right.

So what does a typical day look like as a Vegan? Well it truly depends. Some days are healthier than others, but I always strive for high carb and low fat, and fruit always, ALWAYS for breakfast. It makes you feel great, buzzing with energy, hydrated and satisfies your body completely. The more fruit you eat, the more your body craves it - because it is literally nature's superfood.

Fruit does digest quickly, so that's why I'm constantly eating throughout the day! With meals higher in fat (from nuts, oil, avocado etc) it's almost like your body notices immediately and you feel that tad more lethargic - even if they do taste amazing! So 99% of my cooking is done without oil, it's just steamed, baked or panfried quickly without much oil.

Even if i'm on the run, i'll still get my fruit it! This was a litre banana smoothie - 7 spotty bananas blended with about 1/2 ltr of water!

Going plant-based is the single best decision I have ever made - for a number of reasons! Once you eat plants, you'll never miss anything else - Your tastebuds change every 2 weeks as well, so it's pretty easy to start getting hooked on the good stuff! x

HairBliss Repair Oil Review

I was ever so kindly given a sample of this by HairBliss themselves to see what I thought on the product. To be honest, I hadn't heard of the brand before, so I checked them out and was super pleased to see that the company has a strong focus on all natural and organic ingredients. Being a person who takes note of what I use on my body, I was eager to try this out!

After reading the list of ingredients I knew that the amount of nourishing power this oil treatment has, had to be good! It includes a blend of coconut, castor,  avocado,  olive oil, rosemary,  cedarwood, lavender and geranium oils - which is a lot, but each ingredient is specific to helping to repair your hair and scalp.

What I love about their website also, is that they say "Do you know how incredible your body is designed to feel?" which I completely agree. We all need to start treasuring our bodies (inside & out) with the most naturalist ingredients instead of masking ourself with chemicals and fake colourings etc.

The oil treatment itself I have to say, perhaps didn't smell as good as I had hoped (I usually use pure coconut oil on my hair as a treatment which smells delicious), I think which was due to the rosemary and olive oil in the treatment - but of course that didn't deter me from using it. I coated my hair from scalp to tip with about 2 small handfuls of the oil with plenty to spare in the pouch, and left it on for about 45 minutes. Now like all oil treatments, they can be a little tricky to get out of the hair, so I shampooed twice and conditioned once just to be sure.

I've recently (say, around the last 3 months) had a bit more dandruff than usual - perhaps due to swapping between the hot weather outside, and the cold air conditioning inside buildings. Even just after one treatment I have had noticeably less dandruff (virtually gone!) which I am stoked about, hair is definitely softer and would definitely use again! Like most products, you really have to use it a couple of times to see real benefits, so I definitely shall be continuing with my HairBliss treatment this summer!

EDIT: Thanks guys for uploading my review onto the HairBliss Instagram page!

Skin Care for you & the Earth

In a world with infinite information at our finger tips, it amazes me that we don't utilise this and put it to use! Every time we purchase an item, we are putting our money towards that product and showing our support for it, what it stands for and allowing them to continue their process of manufacture.

This is where Lush and Sukin come in. Both of these companies are here to benefit you and I AND our beautiful planet. Of course there are a variety of other brands on the market that are cruelty free, environmentally conscious and are free from the myriad of harsh chemical products, however I do love to support the Australian market and encourage my friends and family to do so as well.

What I love about Sukin is that they are literally all about "Skincare that doesn't cost the Earth", which perfectly aligns with my own personal philosophy when it comes to health (and even my Design ethics). They are completely carbon neutral and only use ingredients that contain "active botanicals and essential oils [that are] carefully selected to restore vitality and radiance to the skin" as well.

Ever looked at the back of a skincare product and read the ingredients and wondered what on earth it all means, let alone where it comes from? With both Lush and Sukin products, it's much more simple. You can read their ingredients and understand perfectly what you're putting onto your skin and body. What astounds me though, is when other designer skincare labels advertise (and use it as their point of sale) that it contains a small percentage of "essence of rose hip oil" or "added Vitamin E!" when in fact you could be using a product that ONLY contains the active ingredients (which is what Lush and Sukin both do!). Of course, depending on how dry my skin is, I like to go back to basics and just use one simple ingredient (that has so many healing ailments anyway) such as coconut oil, rose hip oil or castor oil.

Also unfortunately after doing a bit of research, I've realised that my usual foundation by Chanel does support animal testing. After reading about Chanel's testing methods, it seems they don't personally test their products on animals by outsource laboratories to do so for them so they can claim that "Chanel does not test on animals". I'm not surprised by this at all to be honest, coming from a corporate makeup and perfume enterprise. I certainly won't be purchasing this again (even though unfortunately it is a great product). I am open to suggestions for cruelty-free AND vegan makeup brands if anyone has recommendations!

August Adventures !

Outside the front of the boyfriend's house - It's rather warm and welcoming and cute I daresay.

Everyone should go try the Vegan Vibe burger at About Life cafe in Balmain! it's one of my favourite treats, especially when I can't decide what I feel like for lunch and leaves you full and very satisfied. It has avocado, a giant field mushroom, lentil and chickpea pattie, tomato, tahini dressing and served with sweet potato fries. Absolutely to die for mmmmm
Flowers errrrryyywhere now that Spring is approaching !

Always seem to be craving adventures by the sea. And damn what a beautiful day it was indeed.

Since Listen Out festival is coming up very soon (hell yes), I was inspired to create my own festival flyer for my dream festival. Using a few of my favourite music artists as example artists on the poster, I was inspired by there genre of music and a new take on minimal 90s graphics. A combination of deep house, hip hop feels, trap and even alternative electronic music is featured, but what I thought would tie all of these genres of music is the vibe of the festival rather than the sound. It's all about that filthy bass and a bunch of kids who aren't afraid to get a little hot and sweaty. Mmmm. Also, all the graphics in this poster feature my own photography, so it's 100% my design (minus the typography of course), which I've been trying to do more of lately. This is so I can customise the look  I'm trying to achieve and gain more control of the outcome whist also having full ownership of the graphic. Now to buy a fancy schmanz camera ...

I don't think I've got enough sunset photo's on my phone to be honest ....

And of course a few staples to help me pump out my design work.... why do I always crave coffee arrrggghhhhhhhh !
